Intrigue – DJ/Turntablist/Producer
From time to time, Lou sneaks out as his alter-ego Intrigue . One thing’s clear with this one – the moniker counts. Intrigue won’t let his audience have all the answers right away. Not when he is influenced by hip-hop, funk and soul with a pinch of Dub, DnB & Experimental beats. Prior to this, he has been on deck duties at venues such as Stereolab, Beermarket and Butter Factory and nights such as Good Times and Syndicate. He is also resident of Turn Up The Heat!, a monthly night at Blu Jaz Cafe that presents fresh new talent. This is his debut at Pushin’On.

DJ RAH
RAH’s ear for hip hop progressed to an appreciation for electronic and bass music. Attending underground parties since early 2000s was a pivotal factor in satiating her fascination with drum & bass. She landed her first gig at Good Times (Singapore, December ’09) and continued to make occasional appearances in the circuit such as Heavy Hong Kong (Hong Kong, ’10), and +65: DJ STORM (Singapore, ’11).

Recent mix tapes show her diverse influences in music while favouring head-bopping beats and groovy rhythms. RAH’s debut at Pushin’On will provide an aural insight into the realm of 80bpm – 130bpm.

DJ NDC
NDC got into the business back in 1999 when things were a little different. The scene evolved and so did the style. However NDC’s timeless stew of old school hip hop, funk and soul still gets the crowd grooving. Apart from residencies at Fluid, Embargo & Loof between 1999 -2007, he has dropped legendary sets at Kinemat parties and Pushin’On nights. The next hook comes at Pushin’On this month.

Catch all 3 Pushin’On residents with some funky gems from 2012. The year is only 3 months old but so much good music has already come out. And we’ve got some of the best!

Masterpiece and the Mighty Mighty ‘live’
Jimmy Saville started it in ‘43. DJ Francis Grasso made beatmatching cool in ‘69 and Kool Herc stretched the breaks in ‘73. Chuck Brown & the Soul Searchers showed that a band could go-go non-stop and Breakestra completely blurred the lines between DJ and band.

Tonight, the Mighty Mighty continues the rare tradition of non-stop party bands with the debut of a ‘live’ mix set. This 30 min set includes classics from Kool & The Gang, BT Express, The Chi-Lites, King Floyd, James Brown and the Quantic Soul Orchestra. Ladies, you’re strongly advised to wear comfortable shoes.

DJ Mig One (Starflam / Orishas)
Mig One is a producer and DJ from Belgium. When he’s not busy digging for records, he produces for Starflam, a platimum selling hip-hop band from Liege. This continues his successful production career, most notable for winning a Latin Grammy Award in 2003 for his work on Emigrante, the sophomore album from the Cuban hip-hop group Orishas. Mig One’s been busy trawling the streets of Singapore for precious vinyl and that’s going into his set at Pushin’On along with some wicked latin funk and hip-hop.

DJ JNR
Hailing from Toronto, JNR credits his love for music to the weekly trips to the record shop at the local mall with his dad and siblings at a ripe young age of 5. Older cousins with regular basement parties also had a huge part in inspiring him to DJ. In Singapore since 1998, he has been purveying his brand of soul-inspired feel-good music whenever he plays. Whether it’s a throwback vibe of disco and rare groove nuggets, big apple disco rap, Philly soul, golden era hip hop, or the early sounds of house – his soulful selection will get you in the mood.

Masterpiece and the Mighty Mighty ‘live’
The Mighty Mighty’s 3-set session last month went down like a storm and for the whole of 2012, you will continue to enjoy 3 sets of funk, soul and R&B from Singapore’s toughest funk band. This month, the Mighty Mighty adds more heaters to the set including hipshakers from the Quantic Soul Orchestra and Kool & the Gang. PLUS a mashup of Prince with Frank Williiams and the Rocketeers; as we give respect to the original funk bomb that inspired Prince’s classic hit from 1986.

DJ Sarah Love
Rounding off a highly successful 2011 as the official tour DJ for Aloe Blacc, DJ Sarah Love’s reputation as the “1st Lady Of Hip Hop” began in her early days as DJ for London’s renowned “Kung Fu” parties, and on the city’s underground radio stations.

The DJ reputation Sarah built at home has led to tours across five continents, building her position as one of the leading international Hip Hop club DJs, especially noteworthy in a male-dominated music industry.

In 2007 she joined the BBC’s urban music specialist station 1Xtra to present the “Friday Night Hip Hop Mix Show” and their “Weekend Wake-Up Show”. The prestige of being the BBC’s main Hip Hop DJ, and one of the few female specialists in broadcasting, further established her name globally.

MTV Europe appointed Sarah as their official (and only) female VJ for the Base Network, broadcasting to over 60 countries worldwide. As well as presenting her own monthly show “Good Look”, Sarah also interviewed international stars on Trevor Nelson’s “The Lick”, “Spanking New Music” and worked with the NFL Stateside on “NFL Touchdown”. Sarah was instrumental in the launch of the continents’ now successful “MTV Africa” channel, and has also toured worldwide as an official “MTV Soundsystem DJ”.

In 2009, Sarah was nominated “Best DJ” at the internationally renowned MOBO Awards. This was her second time to receive such recognition and Sarah is the only female to have ever been nominated in this category.

Sarah has worked in clubs and on radio and TV in the US, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa. She regularly features in urban music magazines and has shared the stage with artists such as The Roots, Wu-Tang Clan, KRS-1.

With plans for new club nights, broadcasting, music releases, international tours and more, 2012 will be another big year for the “One Woman Wrecking Machine”.

Funk Bastard
With this appearance, Funk Bastard now holds the record for most number of consecutive guest appearances at a Pushin’On Anniversary. He enters a potentially golden year after a busy 2011 with releases on the Darker than Wax label (as Cosa Nostra and Loki Laredo), throwing crazy parties at the new Velvet Underground (as Darker Than Wax and Disco:very) and also a tour of France. Now that’s what my mum would call happening!

Pushin’On Residents
Rounding off the musical trip are the Pushin’On residents. For the past 6 years, they’ve kept you on the dancefloor and made you wake up on many Saturday mornings with aching feet and sore heads. Tonight won’t be any different. Here’s what they have in store for you;

DJ Shellsuit – Revisting the classic Boom Bap sound with US and UK hip-hop, reggae and rare library record breaks.

DJ Dave Code – With a DJ career spanning 20+ years, Dave’s collection runs deep. Expect the freshest hip hop sounds from the 80’s, 90’s and 2K, combined with some classic funk and refreshed edits to keep things up to date. Whatever he plays, you know it’s gonna be funky.

DJ Chunk – Returning from his recent trip back to Scotland and Amsterdam, Chunk will be dropping some fresh 45’s for the party. Expect funk edits and some good ol’ soul to celebrate the occasion.

The Mighty Mighty ‘live’ feat. Biddy Low & Dominic Soon
The house band of Pushin’On resumes normal service at Blu Jaz Café with their first performance of 2012. No better way to welcome the New Year than with 3 delightful additions!

First delight is Biddy Low; artist, photographer and singer with an eclectic range. You may have seen her on the mic with Breakbeat Theory, singing over electronic beats and blips. Since Nov 2011, Biddy has been the Mighty Mighty’s closely guarded secret as we build up our repertoire of dancefloor jazz. This is her debut!

Also making his debut with the Mighty Mighty is Dominic Soon; economist by day and Nord enthusiast by night. We first heard of Dominic from his days with Tighten Up and his debut ends our year-long search for a lead keyboardist. Get ready for a fuller Mighty Mighty sound when Dominic drops some funkanomics on a Nord Electro 3.

The final delight from the Mighty Mighty in 2012 is that we add a 3rd set for all our performances at Pushin’On. We’ve had many requests from folks who arrive late and just missed out on our sets. We hear you, and we’re giving it to you. The 3rd floor will be bumping way past midnight!

The Mighty Mighty is the house band of Pushin’On and throughout the year, you’ve danced to the hard funk and raw soul of this 7-piece juggernaut. In this final Pushin’On performance of 2011, we think you deserve a preview of the evolution planned for 2012. This evolution has 2 names. Renee Smith and Ad Jeuken.

Renee Smith is a Canadian native who you first heard 2 months ago ‘live’ at Pushin’On. With a dramatic mezzo-soprano tone reminiscent of Marva Whitney, she ripped through Sharon Jones’ 100 Days, 100 Nights and the Quantic Soul Orchestra’s Pushin’On. She returns this month with a longer set, unleashing that voice on jams from Deep Street Soul, Ria Currie and Aretha Franklin.

Ad Jeuken is a funk keyboardist/organist from the Netherlands and a close friend of Joel Dekkers, trumpeter for the Mighty Mighty. In the Netherlands, Ad has sessioned for countless funk, soul and R&B bands and true to the tradition of funk, he is a big fan of the Hammond sound. Now on a short sojourn to Asia, Ad Jeuken brings his funky organ stylings to Pushin’On for the first time.

Funk Bast*rd
Returning to the Blu Jaz dancefloor is Dean Chew, otherwise known as Funk Bast*rd of Cosa Nostra, Loki Laredo, Disco-very, Darker Than Wax and 3RD Party. Funk Bast*rd rocks out tonight with the sickest disco, boogie and nu-funk. He will also be dropping some newfound gems from his ongoing Europe mini-tour.

Unconventional Science
Also returning to the Pushin’On dancefloor is Unconventional Science, co-promoter of Superfly, New Delhi’s only funk night. Now on his South-East Asian Tour, Pushin’On is his only stop in Singapore and you’ll get to hear a diverse selection of Asian funk records from this deep record digger.

DJ JNR
DJ JNR makes his debut at Pushin’On tonight via Prive, Mimolette, La Maison and Velvet Underground. JNR’s sound constantly evolves but yet at its heart, is a rare blend of Deep House, Detroit Techno, Boogie, Philly Soul and early House. Always pushing all forms of Soul-inspired music, he’s been also known to throw down genre blurring sets or hold it down with straight up Old School Hip Hop.

The Mighty Mighty is the house band of Pushin’On, continuing a timeless tradition of funk nights around the world such as Motherfunk and Breakin’ Bread. Now a 7-piece fronted by Masterpiece, the Mighty Mighty features some of the funkiest young musicians around. The Mighty Mighty hits the 3rd floor of Blu Jaz with 2 sets of funk, soul and R&B.

Tonight, the Mighty Mighty debuts fresh new covers from 2 giants of soul music. We cover a tune from Chicago’s Curtis Mayfield, the Chicago man with the poignant falsetto and socially conscious lyrics.
